Utility & Public Fleet Council
Natural Gas Powered Freightliner M2 Project
Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), John Deere Power Systems, and Freightliner Trucks in conjunction with the
Clean Vehicle Education Foundation (CVEF) are pleased to announce an investigative project whose utlimate goal is
Freightliner's market availability of its Business Class M2 chassis with a factory-installed John Deere natural gas engine.
This project addresses the need for life-cycle cost competitive installation of natural gas engines into medium/heavy
duty day-cab chassis. These types of trucks are commonly used in utility and public fleet applications such as dump trucks,
bucket trucks and street sweepers, as well as in a variety of "short-haul" delivery applications.
This investigative project follows on groundwork conducted by PG&E in which the company has field-retrofitted several
dozen Freightliner FL70s (gas crew trucks and dump trucks) with natural gas-powered John Deere engines
(For more on PG&E's FL70 project, please click here).
A critical part of this scoping process is the identification of customers who may be interested in eventually purchasing
this product. Our plan is to survey potential purchase interest, aggregate national demand, then share this potential
market interest with Freightliner management to help them evaluate and build a sound business case.
We ask that you review the M2 specification sheet and identify
your potential purchase quantity interest (Survey). Please note that your interest
quantities are non-binding and are purely for discussion purposes.
